Crucial Crew is a scheme that targets 10-11 year old children and is designed to help them to:

  • avoid becoming the victims of crime
  • cope with dangerous situations
  • learn social responsibility
  • understand the role of police and community services.
ACRO will act as facilitator for communities prepared to operate such a Program.

How does the scheme work?

Crucial Crew, developed by Crime Concern in the UK' operates by setting up a number of "sets" within a large and enclosed site. Each set gives a scenario which poses problems or dangers to children, e.g. what to do if they observe a crime. There is a mix of scenarios to provide a range of situations which children may well encounter in everyday life.

Each set is staffed by members of the service (police, ambulance and so forth) which is operating the scenario. The children, working in small groups of 3 or 4 and under close supervision, tackle each of the sets during the session. When they complete the set they are told or shown what they did which was correct or incorrect. At the end of the session the whole class is debriefed so that important points can be clarified and re-emphasised.

Who is involved in the Crucial Crew Scheme?

This is a multi-agency approach. There is input from the police, Fire Brigade, Ambulance Service, Community Organisations, other emergency services and the corporate sector.

What is required of participating schools?

There are no special requirements other than the normal one of informing parents and gaining their consent. In fact, the organisers feel that it is important that children are not specifically prepared for the visit to the venue. It is desirable for the teachers of the classes involved to attend a short briefing before the Scheme commences.
