The first ACRO Family Centre was established in 1986 close to the old Boggo Rd jail. The centre was designed to provide information and support to families of prisoners and served as a drop in centre
where families could share their experiences and support each other. In 1989 the centre relocated to the Wacol area where five correctional centres were co-located and expanded its services to include a courtesy transport service to the correctional centres
in the local area. Up until 2007, the Family Centre provided free tea and coffee, information and referrals, toys and play area for children and provided a friendly and supportive atmosphere for families. From 2008, the Family Centre will become a community resource
centre for partnered organisations seeking to support disadvantaged persons. Operating on a rostered basis, these organisations, including ACRO itself, will provide no-cost advocacy and advice across a range of areas
including criminal justice.
A Report outlining the need for services for families titled Serving Time on the Outside was published in 2003 and authored by Fiona Begg.
